IN CHAOS AND CONFUSION ABOUT ENGINEERING ADMISSIONS,MR.AVINASH CHATORIKAR OF VIDYALANKAR PROVIDES A GUIDING LIGHT BY HIGHLIGHTING VITAL MUST-KNOW INFORMATION ABOUT THE PROCESS
The admission process that engineering aspirants go through can numb the mind at times. At others, there is ambiguity. It is not surprising then to have innumerable questions ranging from which course to opt for to preferable colleges, ideal specialisations,the entrance procedures, different admission rounds... Mr Avinash Chatorikar sheds light on some of the key aspects of the engineering admission process.
WHAT IS ENGINEERING CAP
With the exception of autonomous institutes, the Centralized Admissions Process is applicable for admission to most of the engineering colleges in Maharashtra and is referred to as 'CAP. Admission to autonomous/ university colleges like ICT,VJTI,COEP,VIT,SGGS,Walchand follows a separate procedure based on MHT- CET criterion with a different application form.If admission is secured at any autonomous institution,the student cannot apply for CAP.There will be about 1,15,000 seats available through CAP this year.This includes 21,000 and 32,000 seats for Mumbai and Pune University respectively
The seats filled on the basis of MHT CET for students of Maharashtra domicile are known as Maharashtra State Seats. These consist of 100% seats of SNDT (only for girls),85% of BATU (Dr.Babasaheb Ambedkar Technological University,Lonere),65% of seats from private non-minority institutes and about 25 % of private minority institutes. For students who have cleared AIEEE exam,15% of seats of private non-minority institutions and about 4% seats of minority institutions are available.These are known as All India Seats.The percentage of minority seats available for CAP may vary with the institutes as per their policy.
WHAT ABOUT THE ONLINE ADMISSION FORMS
Students who are eligible either for Maharashtra State Seats/ All India Seats or also eligible for both types of seats are required to fill a single form on the www.dte.org.in/fe2011 within the prescribed time limit. Those who are eligible for All India seats are expected to pay additional fees by DD.
Once the form is duly filled, do make it a point to confirm it at the Application Receipt Centre (ARC) by producing the required certificates and other necessary documents. After the final confirmation date, merit list is prepared. This process normally commences immediately after MHT CET results and ends in early July.
HOW DOES ONE DECODE THE VARIOUS ROUNDS
Totally there are four rounds to this process. The first three rounds are the allotment type rounds which happen via the Online Option Form. The fourth round is 'Counseling' type.All these rounds commence approximately from the second week of July and may continue till the end of August.
For round one, only one online option form is to be filled through which students can apply for admission to any participating college of engineering in Maharashtra.There is only one option form to be filled irrespective of the fact that whether student is applying to state seats or All India seats or both.
Students can give a maximum of 20 options for round one and up to 30 and 40 options for round two and three respectively. These rounds are identical to round one i.e. Allotment Type. Round four is the counseling type. DO remember that round 2,3,4 are essentially vacancy rounds,Therefore,as one goes from round 1 to round 4,the vacancies keep on reducing.
HOW DOES ONE PICK THE RIGHT PREFERENCES
It is advisable to consider the status and category of college while selecting the college. While choosing the preference order i.e. which course-college combination should be given first preference and the subsequent order for the other colleges, students need to do research about the institutes they are selecting and they should select the colleges only if they are 100% sure about the same. The trends over the past few years, when it comes to selecting subjects, students from Maharashtra have preferred Computer/ Telecom/ Mechanical Engineering.
WHAT ARE THE FEES CHARGED
There is a fee fixation committee, through which the college fees are fixed. These may vary from Rs 50,000 to Rs.1,00,000.This amount is based on the expenses incurred by the college in the previous year.
HOW IS THE ALLOTMENT OF INSTITUTE LEVEL SEATS
In private unaided colleges, the management can fill maximum 20% seats under institute level quota. Students will have to apply separately to each college. While here the preliminary information is covered, you may still need further detailed information / expert guidance which is available through series of seminars that are being conducted by Vidyalankar from now up to end of June 2011.Vidyalankar has been doing this philanthropic activity of giving valuable information /guidance to anxious parents & students for the past several years.
